Uber’s $200 helicopter taxi: Manhattan to JFK airport in 8 minutes flat

Need to get to the airport fast? In case you missed it, Uber now offers a helicopter service from downtown Manhattan to JFK airport in just 8 minutes.

For $200US, do you think it is worth the price?

Here’s what a typical trip looks like:

  1. Book your Uber Copter trip with the Uber app — you’ll see Copter as an option if your journey starts within the designated zone. This can be done up to five days in advance, or just 30 minutes before your flight.
  2. An Uber car will pick you up from your location and bring you to the Downtown Manhattan Heliport.
  3. At the heliport, you’ll check in and watch a 90-second safety video before boarding. “This process is intended to take as little time as possible as Uber Copter is meant to provide time savings for people to get between Lower Manhattan and JFK, and vice versa,” an Uber spokesperson told CNBC in an email.
  4. Embark on your eight-minute chopper ride to JFK airport, where you’ll land at a helipad near Terminal 8.
  5. There, an Uber car will take you to your departure terminal.

Depending on the day and time you arrive and the way you choose to travel from JFK to NYC, the trip can take about 30-40 minutes or well over an hour.Apr 29, 2019.
To catch up your schedule can sometimes be priceless, even by 20 minutes. I have been sweating in a traffic jam several times and twice missed a long haul flight due to traffic accident.

I don’t get it – that’s insanely underpriced. Think of the cost of training that pilot. Think of the cost of maintaining and running the helicopter. How much is the pilot’s share? I imagine it’s well under 50% because of the costs of Uber using the pad space and airspace and air traffic control and the premium revenue Uber would want for the service.

I would think the cost of that trip should be somewhere in the neighborhood of $500 to $1000.

It makes sense if you’re really late for a
    flight. Plus have the money..

It takes 30 to 40 minutes from the Bronx to JFK for about $60 in a taxi …it takes 30 to 40 minutes from the Bronx to the heliport and then another 8 minutes to JFK for $200 ..just go straight from the Bronx to JFK and save $140

Perfect option , at the end time is money … money is time , so if you are late and have a flight to catch …instead of losing hours for the next flight , time vs money … if you can afford it .. why not ?
