Center for Journalism & Democracy Awards Nearly $200,000 to 10 HBCU Student Newsrooms
The Center for Journalism & Democracy at Howard University is awarding nearly $200,000 to 10 student newsrooms at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) through its inaugural Newsroom Innovation Challenge. This initiative aims to enhance newsroom technology, business operations, audience engagement, and reporting at campus news outlets.
The grants, ranging from $4,000 to $29,000, will support various aspects such as website improvement, equipment purchases, stipends for editors and writers, and funding for investigative journalism. Recipients include Howard University, Morgan State University, University of the District of Columbia, Morehouse College, Florida A&M University, North Carolina A&T University, North Carolina Central University, Savannah State University, and Texas Southern University.
The program seeks to address the resource gap between HBCU and predominantly white institutions, providing crucial support to foster talent and bolster journalism at these institutions.
