Father Becomes Trained Birth Doula After His Wife Experiences Pregnancy Complications

James and Shunquita Hogue became new parents to James II three years ago.

The young couple from Kansas City, Missouri, did their due diligence of research, and from the start, they wanted a natural home birth.

However, six to eight weeks before their son’s due date, Shunquita began to experience pregnancy complications, which presented itself as gestational diabetes.

Despite several challenges, they were able to realize the importance of proper care during childbirth and inspired by this experience, James decided to become a trained birth doula to support expecting mothers.

Through his nonprofit Fathers Assisting Mothers, James Hogue is currently empowering other fathers to embrace this supportive role.

FAM's Dad Doula Bootcamp, a four-week program, is among the various initiatives provided by the nonprofit to assist soon-to-be fathers.
