Detroit’s First Black Owned And Community Run Food Co-op Opens Its Doors (14 Years in the Making)
The Detroit Food Commons complex at 8324 Woodward in Detroit's North End features a 15,000-square-foot grocery store on its ground floor, while the second floor includes office space, a banquet hall, and four commercial kitchens managed by chef Gabriel Vincent. These kitchens support local food-based businesses.
The co-op grocery store, tailored to local needs through community engagement, stocks 50% conventional and 50% organic products to maintain balanced pricing. It is part of the National Co+op Grocers, enhancing its purchasing power while preserving autonomy.
Local collaboration is emphasized, with produce sourced from four local farms, and over 70 locally-sourced products available. Vendors must meet specific standards, including using licensed commercial kitchens and proper labeling.
The $22 million development faced delays due to supply chain issues but received a $100,000 grant from Motor City Match. A membership campaign resulted in over 2,800 members, each paying a $200 fee, though the store is open to the public without membership requirements.
